Description

Dry, full bodied, mature volcanic white wine, made from verdelho grape variety. From micro-region Biscoitos,  Terceira Island, Azores. The location is part of UNESCO World Heritage. Wine is currently produced here only on a mere 9 hectares.

Anselmo MENDES is one of the most renowned Portuguese winemaker in the world. He is often mentioned as the King of Alvarinho in wine-circles. It is thanks to him, that this white grape variety, originally brought to Portugal from Burgundy by medieval monks, is now producing the grandest white wines of the country.

“TYPE OF WINE
Muros de Magma is made exclusively from the grape Verdelho. The vineyards are planted in the so-called ‘curraletas’ of Biscoitos, part of the landscape and heritage of the Terceira Island. The vines grow on volcanic soils, surrounded by magma rocks that protect them from the strong winds of the atlantic, originating a unique and special wine.
KEY POINTS
Handpicked grapes into 20 kg wicker baskets and carried to the winery in a short period of time. Soft pressing of the whole de-stemmed grape. After the static decantation in cold, it’s transfered to used french oak barrels of 300L. After the fermentation, this wine stays under fine lees in battonage for 6 months.
TASTING NOTES Intense yellow color. Austere aroma, typical from this grape. Saline notes and basalt stone, with a vibrant acidity. Pure terroir.”
