Marcampo

Right off a Tuscan postcard, the 5 hectare winery is located under the town of Volterra. The founder of  one of the most renowned local restaurant, called Del Duca purchased the vineyard in 2003, their first harvest was in 2007.  The vineyards are organic, and since the opening, the owner’s daughter, Claudia Del Duca also joined in with the winemaking. Their main varieties are Vermentino, Sangiovese and Merlot, with two old Tuscan grape varieties, called Ciliegiolo and Pugnitello. The soil under the vines is mostly dense clay, with a surprisingly high salt and mineral content. The area was once a seabed, the clay is often spotted with beautifully preserved ancient fossils .
