“The wine takes its name from the Kabócás vineyard, located on the southern slope of Antal Hill (Szigliget). The area is protected on three sides by the hillside, while the waters of Lake Balaton reflect the sun’s rays onto the vineyard from the south. The combination of these conditions makes the area warm and sheltered from the wind, creating an ideal winter habitat for cicadas, specifically one species, Cicada orni. Hence the name as Kabócás means : the place with cicadas. When we purchased the vineyard in the early 2000s, cicadas were not yet common inhabitants in the area, or even in Hungary indeed.
However, what is good for cicadas is not always ideal for the grapes. Due to the lack of air movement, the area is prone to fungal diseases. To protect against this, we employ open, airy foliage and thorough green work. The area is also characterized by botrytis, or noble rot, which gives the Kabócás its distinctive aroma of botrytized wine.
The Kabócás embodies everything we think about the olaszrizling ( welschriesling ) variety. This special vineyard site produces only Kabócás wines in years when it meets our own quality standards. The 2018 Kabócás welschriesling has notes of tea, vegetable soup, and walnut liqueur, with a salty, mineral finish typical of the area and a straw-yellow colour, reminiscent of its predecessors.” – Translated from Szaszi Estate’s Hungarian description
