Somlo
One of the smallest and most curious wine regions of Hungary, only 438 hectares. Its lean, unique, distinctly volcanic and mineral-rich wines have been deservedly world-renowned for centuries. The lonely, free standing extinct volcano, rising from the North-Western plane of Hungary is easy to recognise even from a distance. The earliest proof of human settlements here are dated to the Bronze-Age. The first grapevines were most probably planted by the inhabitants of the nearby Roman Post, called Mogentia. Somlo is predominantly a white wine region, its main variety is the indigenous juhfark. Juhfark is also one of the world’s rarest grapes, growing not even on 100 hectares in total, 79 hectares of which is on Somlo. Also part of the appellations are two smaller old volcanoes called Sag and Kissomlyó, both producing equally excellent wines.
